Alappuzha district has reported an estimated ₹55.64 crore in losses following a week of heavy rain and related flooding. Damage has been reported across several sectors, including local self-government institutions, agriculture, public works, electricity, fisheries, animal husbandry and dairy development. The local self-government sector accounted for approximately ₹30.34 crore of the reported losses, while agricultural damage was estimated at around ₹20.4 crore. The figures highlight the significant impact that prolonged monsoon rainfall and flooding can have on the district’s infrastructure and agricultural economy. Kuttanad, with its low-lying agricultural landscape and extensive network of canals and waterways, has been particularly vulnerable to waterlogging. Restoration of roads, drainage systems, public facilities and agricultural areas remains important as the district continues to deal with the effects of the monsoon.

Land acquisition activities for the proposed railway doubling between Thuravoor and Ambalappuzha are set to move forward alongside tender-related procedures. The railway doubling programme is being implemented in phases covering sections including Ambalappuzha–Alappuzha, Alappuzha–Mararikulam and Mararikulam–Thuravoor. The Ambalappuzha–Thuravoor section has remained an important missing link in the coastal railway corridor, where other sections already have double tracks. Completion of the doubling project is expected to improve railway capacity through the Alappuzha region and create opportunities for additional train services. The project is also expected to benefit daily commuters, students, workers and long-distance passengers by improving railway connectivity and reducing operational constraints along the busy coastal route.

A colourful face-painting competition was organised in Alappuzha as part of the publicity activities for the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The event was organised by the publicity committee for higher-secondary and college students and focused on the theme “Alappuzha and Nehru Trophy Boat Race.” The competition brought together young participants and combined art, local culture and sporting traditions. Winners were selected from participating educational institutions, while certificates and encouragement prizes were also planned for participants. The event forms part of the build-up to one of Alappuzha’s most prominent annual sporting and cultural celebrations. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race attracts significant public attention and highlights the district’s long-standing association with Vallam Kali and traditional snake-boat racing.

Students in Kuttanad are facing difficulties as Onam examinations begin amid continuing floodwater and waterlogging. Schools in parts of Kuttanad had remained closed for 12 consecutive days since August 1, disrupting regular classes and leaving students with limited time to prepare for examinations. Several school premises and access routes have been affected by floodwater. At some locations, students and teachers have reportedly had to navigate difficult waterlogged areas to reach educational institutions. The prolonged disruption has also affected the completion of portions of the curriculum. Parents and students have expressed concern about the academic impact of the prolonged closure. Local conditions remain closely linked to the drainage of surrounding agricultural fields and the overall improvement of water levels in Kuttanad.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sanctioned ₹42.6 crore to address persistent waterlogging and drainage problems along NH 66 in Alappuzha and Kollam districts. The initiative is aimed at improving drainage systems along the highway and reducing the impact of heavy monsoon rainfall on road users. In Alappuzha, where several stretches of the highway pass through low-lying and water-sensitive areas, effective drainage is particularly important during the monsoon. The proposed works are expected to improve the movement of vehicles, reduce water accumulation on the highway and strengthen the road infrastructure against recurring heavy rainfall. The project is also significant for residents, commuters, businesses and emergency services that depend on NH 66 as a major transportation corridor through the district.
