The Kerala Police took disciplinary action against five police personnel following the findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that reinvestigated an alleged assault on Youth Congress workers during the Nava Kerala Yatra in Alappuzha in 2023. An 80-year-old woman, Thankamma, was found dead in the backwaters near Kanakakunnu in Muthukulam, Alappuzha. According to the police investigation, the elderly woman had been living alone and was reported missing from her home. Her body was later recovered from the backwaters after local workers noticed it near a jetty. Police reported that her hands and legs had been bound and that jewellery was missing. Following the investigation, police took a relative, Prakashan, into custody. Investigators examined CCTV footage and questioned people in the area. The stolen jewellery was subsequently recovered from a jewellery shop in Kayamkulam. The accused was remanded in judicial custody.
