The build-up to this year’s Nehru Trophy has already transformed several parts of Alappuzha into lively sporting centres. Boat clubs have established training camps and are preparing their crews for the demanding competition on Punnamada Lake.
Training is focused on developing the strength, endurance and synchronization required to handle the long chundan vallams. Hundreds of rowers must maintain a common rhythm, making teamwork one of the most important factors in snake-boat racing.
Several teams have started preparing well in advance of the August 22 competition. The training camps also demonstrate the strong community participation associated with vallamkali, with local villages, clubs and supporters contributing to the preparations.
The sporting preparations provide visitors with an opportunity to experience an important part of Alappuzha’s living cultural heritage. The combination of traditional boat-building, rowing practice, music and community participation makes vallamkali unique among sporting events in the district.
