The Kerala Police took disciplinary action against five police personnel following the findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) that reinvestigated an alleged assault on Youth Congress workers during the Nava Kerala Yatra in Alappuzha in 2023.
The case received renewed attention after the new government ordered a reinvestigation. The seven-member SIT was headed by Superintendent of Police A.P. Shoukathali.
According to reports, the investigation examined allegations concerning the handling of the original case and the availability of visual evidence. Five personnel, including members of the former Chief Minister’s security detail, were suspended following the SIT report.
The case remains an important example of the role of independent investigation and police accountability in examining allegations concerning law enforcement.
