Alappuzha is gearing up for the 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race, one of Kerala’s most prestigious traditional sporting events. The race is scheduled to be held at Punnamada Lake on August 22, 2026, bringing together leading snake-boat teams and thousands of spectators for a spectacular celebration of rowing, teamwork and sporting tradition.
Preparations have already gained momentum across the district, with several prominent chundan vallam teams beginning intensive training camps. Boat clubs associated with boats including Nadubhagam, Melpadom, Thalavady, Aroma, Niranam, Punnayalan Niranam, Arpookara, Karichal, St. Pious and Veeyapuram have started preparations for the competition.
The race course at Punnamada stretches approximately 1.4 kilometres, while a typical snake boat carries around 100–150 oarsmen and supporting crew. The event combines athletic endurance with the traditional rhythm of vanchippattu and coordinated rowing.
For Alappuzha, the Nehru Trophy is more than a sporting competition. It is an important part of the district’s cultural identity and attracts visitors while showcasing the backwater heritage of Kerala.
